The Karnaktake Veterniary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University (KVAFSU), Bidar upgraded its 71 year old Agricultural Research Station building at Fisheries college campus, Mangalore into a new research centre; CARPS- Centre of Applied Research on Problematic Soils. This centre and the Mobile Soil and Water Laboratory (MSWL)” of the KVAFSU were inaugurated by Shri Venkatarao Nadagowda, Pro-chancellor and minister for Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, Government of Karnataka on 17th July 2018. Both CARPS and MSWL were dedicated to the nation during the golden jubilee year of the College of Fishereis, Mangalore and also mark the National Fish Farmers Day.
Dr. Shivakumar Magada, professor, College of Fisheries, Mangalore and project Coordinator of KVK, said that this centre would be anodal centre to conduct collaboration research on improving the conduct of problematic research on improving the condition of problematic soils to make them productive for food production. Farmers could get soil and water analysis done in the centre. The core research team would take up need-based research and reach out to the beneficiaries at a faster rate. It is aimed to bring under umbrella, all the stakeholders to do research on various crops, vegetables, fodder, fisheries, aquaonics to increase the production and productivity.
CARPS will serve as an ‘aqua and soil lab’ for farmers, and would help promote community and ecosystem-based approaches for conservation of problematic soils through scientific aquaculture and agriculture. It will have an preview of problems and perspectives and the way forward for using problematic soils for food production.
