With the prime objectives of improvement of commercial aquaculture scenario in West Bengal, discussion among professional brackishwater fish farmers and resource persons/Government Officers/advisors on the problems and reasons lying behind crop failures in brackishwater shrimp farming in the State, counteract it and devise remedial measures, and to devise management steps so that farmed shrimps could be sold at fair price in market, the Bengal Aqua Expo 2017 was organized by Surendranath Institute of Aquaculture Training and Research, pruba Medinipur, with active collaboratin of Aqua-Technicians Welfare Association, Contai, purba Medinipur at Nachinda Jibonkrishna High School ground, Vill. Nachinda, Block Contai –III Dist. Purba Medinipur during February 5-6, 2017.
In this programmme, Mr Chandranath Sinha, Minister of Fisheries, Government of West Bengal in his inaugural speech emphasized on the fact that Department of Fisheries, Go WB is constantly implementing innovative and need-based schemes of production enhancement and socio-economic upliftment of the fisherfolks and fish farmers, with a vision to manage, protect enhance and develop fisheries and aquaculture in the state of West Bengal. He also spoke about judicious use of antibiotics in shrimp farming sector and recent developmental initiatives undertaken by the Department. Mr Soumen Sahoo, Professor at Faculty of Fisheries Sciences, WBUAFS lucidly spoke on farming of Litopenaeus vannamei, the FCR involved, polyculture of shrimp and brackishwater finfish species, marine finfish farming in submerged-type cages at Tajpur-Jolda area in coastal Purba Medinipur district. The other dignitaries present in the first day of the programme were MR Sisir Adhikari, Hon’ble MP; Dr Bidhan Chandra Patra, Dean, Faculty of Sciences Vidyasagar University Paschim Medinipur; Mr Madhusudan Reddy, representative from Kakinada Shrimp Hatchery Association; Technical Officer-cum-representative from MPEDA Contai zone; Sabhapati, Contai-III Panchyat Samity; Prodhan of three local Gram Panchayats; Mr Amalesh Chatterjee, distinguished fish farmer.
Many reputed companies doing business in fisheries and aquaculture sector in the country exhibited their company profile, business services and products (pelleted fish feed, fish medicines and healthcare products, pond fertilizers, fish growth promoters, aquaculture instruments and machinery; manufacureers, suppliers and Exporters) in nicely set-up stalls in this two-day Expo.
