SKILL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR AQUACULTURE TECHNICIAN
The Central Institute of Fisheries Education (CIFE), Rhotak centre, Haryana is organizing Skill Development Program on Aquaculture Technician for 25 days from 11th July to 4th August 201. The Programmed is funded by NFDB and includes theory cum practical session, in addition to the field visits in and around Rohtak. The training is designed to produce capable manpower who can work as aquaculture technicians on fish and shrimp farms spread across the country.
The course will have modules on Pre-stocking and post-stocking management in fish and shrimp farming; Disease management, emergency response and personal safety and hygiene in aquaculture.
CIFA ORGANIZES EXHIBITIONCUM WORKSHOP ON INNOVATIONS OF AGRICULTURE IN ODISHA
The Central Institute of freshwater Aquacultture (CIFA), Bhubaneswar in collaboration with the National Innovation Foundation (NIF), Bhubaneswar,, Orissa University of Agriculture Technology, Bhubaneswar and Krishi Vigyan Knedra,Khordha, organized a day programme on “Exhibition and workshop on innovations of agriculture in Odisha” on 8th June, 2018 at CIFA. The programmed created a platform to showcase farmer’s innovation in the field of agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, fisheries, engineering and related fields. A total of 59 innovators from across the state showcased their innovations and about 200 people including farmers, scientists and entrepreneurs attended. The visitors were given and insight on the genesis, novelty and utility of innovations in the context of agri-ecosystem in the state.
WORKSHOP ON PROTEOMICS, IN FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE CONDUCTED
A five day programme on “Proteo mics in fisheries and aquaculture was conducted by the Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI) from 27th June to 2nd July 2018. Proteomics is a highly powerful tool in protein analysis which supplements gene sequence data with protein information about where, in which ratio and under what condition proteins are expressed. The aim of the programme was to provide the young researchers the basics as well as hands-on training on porteomics including the identification and characterization of proteins expressed by a genome or organs/tissues/ cell. The course content of the workshop included introduction to proteomics and Biomarker discovery, SDS-PAGE, 2D- Gel electrophoresis, Western Blotting, 2-D gel based proteomics, Image Analysis, Bioinformatics- MASCOT and MS=Fit, Pathway Analysis, PRIDE Database, FISHPROT Database, Transcriptomics and Pharmacoproteomics.
AQUATIC QUARANTINE FACILITY SET FOR FURTHER EXPANSION
The existing Aquatic Quarantine Facility (AQF) for Penaeus Vannamei located at Neelankarai, Chennai is all geared up to expand further to expand further to quarantine more brooders. The AQF, currently has 20 quarantine cubicles developed in three phases, with total annual quarantine capacity of around 4.12 Lakh brooders. Foreseeing the need to meet the increasing demand of vannamei brooders, the facility is set to expand further by addition of 6 more cubicles. This would enable the facility to quarantine an additional 1.24 Lakh brooders per annum.
The foundation stone for this new phase( Phase IV) was laid on 13th June 2018 by Shri. Tarun Shridhar, IAS, Secretary, Department of Animal Husbandry Dairying & Fisheries, in presence of Dr. A .Jayathilak, Chairman MPEDA, Shri. K. Gopal , Principal Secretary, Dept. of Fisheries, Tamil Nadu, Dr. C. Gopal, Membere Secretary CAA, Dr. K. K. Vijayan, Director CIBA and other key stakeholders of the Aquaculture Industry. Shri. Tarun Shridhar, speaking during the function, informed that the Ministry of Agriculture has arranged funds for the AQF expansion, through the National Fisheries Development Board as part of the “ Blue Revolution” to prioritize and promote aquaculture in India. He added it would help farming of L. Vannamei in other potential stats, like Gujarat, Odisha, Maharashtra and Kerala.
CMFRI- SHORT COURSE ON APPLICATION OF MOLECULAR METHODS IN MARINE FISHERY RESOURCE MANAGEMENT, CONSERVATION AND SUSTAINABLE MARICULTURE (24TH OCT- 3rd NOV, 2018)
The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Cochin is organizing a short duration course on Application of Molecular Methods in Marine Fishery Resource Management , Conservation and Sustainable Mariculture from 24th Oct- 3rd Nov, 2018. The venue for the workshop will be at SMFRI headquarters, Cochin. Te course aims at providing exposure to various applications of molecular methods in fisheries resource management, conservation and sustainable Mari culture including barcoding; moleculat tools for stock identification in fisheries-population genetics; Fishery genomics, metagenomics, transcriptomics etc.

CIFRI CONDUCTS WORKSHOP ON PROTEOMICS IN FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE
CIFTTEST, the rapid detection kit developed by the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, Cochin to detect the presence of chemical preservatives formalin and ammonia in fish is all set preservatives formalin and ammonia in fish is all set for commercial production. The technology has been licensed to the Mumbai-based Hi Media Laboratories Pvt Ltd., and the formal exchange of the MoU was held at a simple function ICAR-CIFT, Cochin on 4th July, 2018. Dr. Tavishankar,C.N., Director, ICAR-CIFT said that the Institute has been in the forefront of technology development for the gravest and post harvest fisheries sectors.
The development o fthe detection kit was in response to the felt needs of the ordinary fish consumer to detect contaminants and allay their apprehensions. Mr. Vishny Warke, Director, HiMedia Laboratories said that the company which had its presence in over 175 countries and has the wherewithal to produce sufficient quantities of the product that will be made available to commitment of the company to provide their products to the Indian and export market at affordable prices. Smt. S J Laly and Smt. E R Priya, Scientists of ICAR-CIFT who developed the rapid detection kits in record time, were felicitated during the function.
The timely commercialization of this kit is boon to consumer in the wake of a spate of recent cases in the states of Kerala and Tami Nadu where seafood contaminated with formalin had entered the market chain.
CMFRI-SKILL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME ON OPEN SEA CAGE CULTURE
A Three day training programme on open sea cage culture and Mariculture was conducted by the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) form 27th to 29th June 2018 at the Tuticoin Research Centre, CMFRI. The training was conducted as a part of the second phase under the skill development programme funded by the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB).
About 50 selected fishers and officials from state Fisheries Department attended the programme. The participants were provided with the training materials and notes, printed in Tamil. A field visit to model sea cage farm in Sippikulam and practical demonstration of site selection for sea cage farming, GI cage fabrication, cage culture of Seabass, Lobster, Pearl oysters, Seaweeds etc., were the highlights of the training course.
K.S SRINIVAS APPOINTED AS MPEDA CHAIRMAN
Shri, Shasidhar K. Srinivas, IAS, Joint Secretary Drought Management & Information Technology, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India, was appointed to the post of Chairman (JS Level), Marine Products Exports Development Authority (MPEDA), Kochi under the Department of Commerce for a combined tenure of seven years up to 8th February 2022. Shri, Srinivas, who belongs to 1997 IAS batch of Kerala cadre replaces Dr. A. Jayathilak
