Marine Exhibition Organized by FSI, Visakhapatnam

The Fishery Survey of India, Visakhapatnam office, organized a two-day marine exhibition on 3rd Feb 2017 in association with CIFNET.

In the inaugural session, Director General, FSI, Mr.Mahesh Kumar Farejiya spoke on energy efficiency in trawling. He said that china has produced 14MMT of fish by using 20million (horse power) HP while India is producing only 3.14 MMT using 9 million HP. Hence there is a need for better energy efficiency.

Deputy Director General (Tech), mercantile Marine Department, Mr.Jayanta Mukhopadhyay, spoke on registration of fishing vessels and why it was necessary.

CIFT Visakhapatnam centre, scientist in-charge, Dr.Subhadeep Ghosh said that fish diversity, mesh size regulation, exempting juveniles from catch are the need of the hour for sustainable fisheries. He said CMFRI, Visakhapatnam, successfully completed analyzing the carbon food print at the major harbors in Andhra Pradesh like Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, Nizampatnam and Krishnapatnam. According to the study, on carbon foot print, for every kilogram of fish, nearly 1.4 kg of carbon dioxide is emitted into the environment.

Mr. Farejiya inaugurated different stalls put up by various departments at the exhibition. A wide range of marine fishes, including ribbon fish, sea horse, hammerhead shark, pomfret and sea cow were on display. Miniature models of fishery survey vessels, and various region-specific fishing gear and crafts, communication and navigational equipment and ready-to-eat fish products were exhibited at the stalls.
